Research question

How much XRP is associated with the top 1% of funded ledger accounts, and what does that ranking actually reveal about holders?

A third-party snapshot published on August 7, 2026 estimated that about 44,823 XRP marked the top 1% of funded XRP Ledger accounts. That is a dated account-balance percentile, not a permanent protocol threshold or a ranking of verified people: custodians can combine many customers in one address, while one person can control several addresses.

01 / Findings

What the evidence answers.

  1. 01

The approximately 44,823 XRP cutoff is a dated third-party estimate, not a fixed XRP Ledger rule.

  2. 02

The source snapshot counted roughly 8.04 million funded accounts, placing about 80,000 ledger accounts in its top percentile.

  3. 03

A ledger account is not the same as a person: exchange omnibus accounts aggregate customers, and one controller can operate many accounts.

  4. 04

A high balance rank does not establish net worth, liquidity, investment performance, identity, or future XRP returns.

02 / Analysis

How much XRP was needed for the top 1%?

The best defensible answer is a dated estimate: approximately 44,823 XRP in an August 7, 2026 third-party distribution snapshot, subject to that provider's account and balance definitions.

Bitrue reported 8,044,922 funded XRPL accounts and placed the 99th-percentile boundary near 44,823 XRP. One percent of that account population is roughly 80,449 accounts; the article reported approximately 80,498 accounts in the cohort, a small difference that may reflect its underlying snapshot or rounding method.

Bithomp's live distribution page later displayed more than 8.08 million accounts holding XRP. That newer account count does not, by itself, produce a newer top-1% balance threshold because the full ordered balance snapshot and inclusion rules are also required. The 44,823 figure should therefore remain labeled August 7, 2026 rather than presented as a live cutoff.

03 / Analysis

How the XRP top-1% percentile should be calculated

Choose one validated ledger, define which accounts qualify, sort their XRP balances from largest to smallest, and read the balance at the account occupying one percent of the ranked population.

A reproducible snapshot records its validated ledger index and close time, the balance field used, whether zero-balance or reserve-constrained accounts are included, and how escrow or special-purpose accounts are handled. If N accounts qualify, the boundary is the balance at the chosen rounding of 0.01 x N after descending sort; ties at the boundary should be disclosed.

XRPSCAN documents a balances endpoint covering the top 10,000 active accounts. That is useful for studying the upper tail, but a top-10,000 list alone cannot locate the 99th-percentile boundary when the denominator exceeds eight million accounts. A complete percentile calculation needs a broader ledger-state snapshot or a provider that publishes its full methodology.

04 / Analysis

Why XRP accounts are not the same as holders

The public ledger measures addresses and balances; it usually cannot determine the number or identity of the people and organizations with an economic claim on those balances.

XRPL.org notes that private exchanges commonly keep customer XRP in a small number of shared ledger accounts. One exchange address can therefore appear as a very large holder while representing balances owed internally to many customers whose individual claims are absent from the public ledger.

The opposite distortion also occurs: one person or business can control several XRPL accounts. Related addresses may be unknown, keys may be lost, and entity labels may be incomplete or outdated. For those reasons, 'top 1% of funded accounts' is the accurate unit; 'top 1% of people' is not supported by public balance data.

05 / Analysis

What the rich-list rank means - and what it does not

The ranking describes a balance's position inside one ledger-account snapshot; it is not proof of wealth, influence, selling capacity, investment skill, or whale behavior.

An address percentile can help describe ledger concentration and compare balance bands over time when the same rules are used. It does not show liabilities, assets held elsewhere, beneficial ownership, exchange customer allocations, cost basis, access to keys, or whether the XRP could be sold near the displayed market price.

The threshold can fall when many small accounts are created even if large balances do not decline, or rise when balances consolidate. Changes may also reflect reserve settings, provider filters, custody migrations, account closures, and ties at a percentile boundary. A point estimate should not be interpreted as a forecast or as a target balance to buy.

06 / Analysis

How to read future top-1% updates

Compare snapshots only when their ledger time, denominator, qualifying-account definition, data source, sorting rule, and treatment of custodial or special-purpose accounts are visible.

A useful update publishes the boundary balance, number of qualifying accounts, number in the top cohort, and changes in several balance bands. It also separates verified entity labels from unknown addresses and avoids converting ledger concentration into claims about individual ownership concentration.

Because account creation and balance movement continue, the threshold can change from one validated ledger to the next. XRPAuthority treats every cutoff as an observed historical result with a review date, not as a live promise or personalized investment guidance.

Methodology

How this XRP research was built.

  1. Use a validated-ledger snapshot and preserve its ledger index, close time, source, and extraction date.
  2. Define funded or qualifying accounts before sorting, then disclose rounding and ties at the one-percent boundary.
  3. Keep address balance, entity attribution, beneficial ownership, custody, and market liquidity as separate claims.
  4. Label externally published thresholds as dated estimates unless the underlying full snapshot can be reproduced.
